Biography

Elliot Gordon was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.  He received a B.S. degree in mathematics at Brooklyn College and an M.A. degree in economics from the City University of New York.

In addition to successful careers as a high school math teacher and as an entrepreneur (promoMan), Mr. Gordon has traveled the world and has lived in Italy and France.  He has studied painting in Florence, Italy, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and since 2001, at the Art Student's League in NYC.

His work has appeared in League shows for six consecutive years and has been singled out for achievement.  He has studied with renowned American painters Larry Poons, William Scharf and Charles Hinman.

Elliot Gordon has completed two solo exhibitions in New York City in 2004 --- the first at the Jadite Gallery in March and the second at the Marmara Gallery.  Throughout 2006 and 2007, he has had various exhibitions in an alternative space - KASHKAVAL - a NYC cafe and wine bar.  In May '07, Elliot was a participant in the NoHo Art Walk.  He feels inspired by Matisse, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Morandi and Thiebaud. They have jettisoned him to his own path of innovative expression.

Artist Statement

Using vivid colors and an interpretive style, I paint non-naturalistic realities that are expressed through interior and still life settings.  The manner in which my subjects are presented give voice to impressions originating from my subconscious.  We are always familiar with what we visualize, but my imagery alters concepts of reality, challenging viewers to wonder, ask questions and substantiate their own reality.

I want my paintings to stimulate thoughts and feelings that take us beyond the four corners of the canvas and then bring us back.  Doors and windows are used as currencies to unlock secrets.  The organic shapes ground us and keep us in the moment.  The symbiotic relationships among all components in my paintings complement each other, yet have a life of their own.
